The History of Tapas
Bite-sized dishes known as tapas are a memorable part of any visit to Spain. According to one theory, the tapa developed in Spain when bartenders began to “tapar”, or cover, wine glasses with a slice of ham or cheese to avoid letting insects or impurities fall into the drink. The custom soon spread, and eventually tapas became commonplace throughout Spain. Today, the tapas trend has spread to other countries, as tapas enthusiasts have learned to make a meal by nibbling on several small “tapa” delights.
At your next cocktail party or dinner, rather than serving standard dinner fare, why not whip up a few tapas, and let your guests enjoy the flavor of Spain. Most tapas are easy to make, and guests can use small tapas plates and toothpicks to sample the tiny treats. Add a pitcher of Spanish sangria, and you have the makings of a great Spanish fiesta! To view a variety of tapas recipes, visit the different Spanish recipes at the top of this page, or purchase your own tapas cookbook from our Unique Gifts section. You will find authentic tapas serving dishes throughout our ceramic collections, particularly in the Mediterranean and Sol Collections. Que aproveche!
